My 13 year old daughter had an opportunity to use a handheld computer and her first impression was that it was poorly designed in terms of her ability to hold it easily and manipulate the keys. She said "why can't it be as easy to use as my Gameboy". It seems to me that for K-12 (and probably others) to use hand helds for educational purposes that attention must be focused on the industrial design as well as the content of the material.
